What are the 5 wires on a Motorised valve for? ›

It is now relatively unusual for the white wire (6^th wire) of a Honeywell 2-port zone valve to be used. It is used to allow independent temperature control of both the heating and the hot water circuit where the installation has pumped heating but gravity hot water.

If you have a mid position valve - the one that makes a T junction, one pipe goes to the hot water cylinder (marked B on the zone valve), and the other to the central heating (A). The pipe marked AB comes from your boiler, so it should be hot.

The DC voltage (along with reduced AC volts) can maintain the motor in the middle position. However, it won't cause the valve to move beyond this. If the system can easily meet your hot water demand (or no demand exists), 230 volts of electricity will travel along the grey wire, to turn off the hot water.

Red wires are secondary live wires in 220-volt circuits and can also be utilized in various switch legs. Red wires are mostly used to connect the home's power system, and hardwired smoke detectors such that if one alarm goes off, all of them go off.

The yellow wires power the zone valve. Once the thermostat calls and the valve opens it closes an end switch (connected to the red leads) which calls in the aquastat relay.

It connects your thermostat to your air handler or furnace. The white wire connects to terminal W in most industry-standard thermostats. If your HVAC system has multiple heating stages, then you may find more than one white wire.

If you have two wires, R or RH go into the R terminal and RC into the RC terminal. If you have more than one wire (for example, you have a wire labeled R and another wire labeled Rc), remove any jumpers between the R and Rc terminals or push the switch to open the RC terminal to insert a wire.

Typically, the yellow wires are for cooling, the green wire is for the fan, the orange wire is for heat pump systems, and the red wire is for power.

What happens if a zone valve is installed backwards? ›

If the valve is installed backwards, the flow of water catches the closure ball, overrides the spring, the valve snaps shut, and the water slams to a halt.

For the system to function properly, each zone valve has its power wired through a thermostat call. When the thermostat makes a call for heat, the zone valve is energized and begins to open. Once fully open, an end switch in the zone valve is closed. This contact closure is to be wired back to the aquastat.

A 5/2 way solenoid valve has five ports and two positions. It can be either normally closed or normally open. When the valve is energised, it switches from one position to the other, allowing fluid to flow through the different ports. On the other hand, a 5/3 way solenoid valve has five ports and three positions.

The 2 port valve has 5 wires. Grey = line, blue = neutral, green/yellow = earth. These connect to the wiring centre terminals 1,2 and 3. The brown wire is the input to the valve motor, and is connected to the output from the high limit thermostat.

A five-port valve is typically used to control a double-acting cylinder. One port is the supply port while two ports are used for performing work, and two exhaust ports. A two-position 5 port valve can extend and retract a cylinder with two exhaust ports.

There are 4 wires: orange (switched live), grey (hot water off), brown & white (heating on) and blue (neutral). I was expecting the orange to become live once the valve had moved to the heating position but that's not the case. It does become live and fire the boiler when hot water is selected.
