A Pdf Test-Set Forwell-Formedness Validation In Jhove - The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

Full Paper - ipres 2017 14th International Conference on Digital Preservation / Kyoto, Japan / September 25 – 29, 2017 Digital preservation and active software stewardship are both cyclical processes. While digital preservation strategies have to be reevaluated regularly to ensure that they still meet technological and organizational requirements, software needs to be tested with every new release to ensure that it functions correctly. JHOVE is an open source format validation tool which plays a central role in many digital preservation workflows and the PDF module is one of its most important features. Unlike tools such as Adobe PreFlight or veraPDF which check against requirements at profile level, JHOVE's PDF-module is the only tool that can validate the syntax and structure of PDF files. Despite JHOVE's widespread and long-standing adoption, the underlying validation rules are not formally or thoroughly tested, leading to bugs going undetected for a long time. Furthermor...

The Portable Document Format (PDF), defined by Adobe Systems Inc. as the basis of its Acrobat product range, is discussed in some detail. Particular emphasis is given to its flexible object-oriented structure, which has yet to be fully exploited. It is currently used to represent not logical structure but simply a series of pages and associated resources. A definition of an Encapsulated PDF (EPDF) is presented, in which EPDF blocks carry with them their own resource requirements, together with geometrical and logical information. A block formatter called Juggler is described which can lay out EPDF blocks from various sources onto new pages. Future revisions of PDF supporting uniquely-named EPDF blocks tagged with semantic information would assist in composite-pagemakeup and could even lead to fully revisable PDF.

Distributed Steganography in PDF Files—Secrets Hidden in Modified Pages

Marek Ogiela

This paper shows how to diffuse a message and hide it in multiple PDF files. Presented method uses dereferenced objects and secret splitting or sharing algorithms. It is applicable to various types of PDF files, including text documents, presentations, scanned images etc. Because hiding process is based on structure manipulation, the solution may be easily combined with content-dependent steganographic techniques. The hidden pages are not visible in typical application usage, which was tested with seven different programs.

Animations in -Generated PDF: A New Method for Directly Embedding Animation into PDF

2004 •

Petr Sojka

This paper presents a new approach for creating animations in Portable Document Format (PDF). The method of animation au- thoring described uses free software (pdfTEX) only. The animations are viewable by any viewer that supports at least some features of Acrobat JavaScript, particularly Adobe (Acrobat) Reader, which is available at no cost for a wide variety of platforms. Furthermore, the capabilities of PDF make it possible to have a single file with animations both for interactive viewing and printing. The paper explains the principles of PDF, Acrobat JavaScript and pdfTEX needed to create animations for Adobe Reader using no other software except pdfTEX. We present a step by step explanation of an- imation preparation, together with sample code, using a literate pro- gramming style. Finally, we discuss other possibilities of embedding ani- mations into documents using open standards (SVG) and free tools, and conclude with their strengths and weaknesses with respect to the method...

Techniques for Analysing PDF Malware

Udaya Tupakula, Vijay Varadharajan

Today, PDF is one of the widely used applications for sharing documents. Some of the important factors for the popular use of the PDF application are due to its platform independency and rich digital offerings such as ability to include multimedia files, direct URL access and HTTP communication. However its wider acceptance among the user community has also attracted the attackers to develop and spread malware using PDF files. Most of the existing security tools are not equipped to deal with the attacks related to PDF. In this paper we present different techniques that can be used by an attacker to generate PDF attacks. Then we propose portable document scanner (PDSCAN) which can detect the attacks by analyzing the suspicious objects and the scripts that are embedded in the documents. PDSCAN makes use of dynamic and static analysis techniques to deal with the malware. Finally we present detail analysis of a malicious PDF file in VirtualBox environment.
