Should I put words on my sound wall? ›

There is no reason you can't display words on both your consonant and vowel wall. You want to be sure that your sound wall doesn't become too busy or crowded that students cannot find the words they need.

Sound walls can be used in primary grades and with older students. The sounds you display may differ at times with different groups, but a sound wall is helpful for all ages. In this post: What is a sound wall?

Sound walls are more effective in supporting students reading and spelling. However, they are especially helpful during times like COVID. We know many teachers are teaching virtually or in-person wearing masks. It can be challenging to help students hear and pronounce the correct sounds virtually or through a mask.

A sound wall should have two distinct sections, one for all the consonant sounds and one for the vowel sounds. You can plan to set up the wall with students as you teach sounds, or set up the entire display and cover sounds until you teach them.

When setting up the sound wall, arrange consonants on the left and the vowels on the right. The consonants are organized according to the type of sound/phoneme (stops, fricatives, affricates, glides, liquids, and nasals) and if the sound is voiced or unvoiced.

You can put high frequency words or heart words on your sound wall, but I would encourage you to consider how much space you have and whether or not it would be visually overwhelming for your students.

While the Secret Stories® posters on their own are an ideal sound wall, they can also be used in-tandem with any existing sound wall or reading/phonics anchor charts, helping to simplify and streamline the sound-symbol connections.

Which Grades Should Use A Sound Wall? Sound walls are an excellent resource for struggling readers of all ages. You introduce sound walls to students using the sounds they already know. The sounds they know in 1st grade are very different than the sounds they know in 2nd or even 3rd grade.
