🍔 About This Recipe

FlameThrower burgers are one of the most popular items at Dairy Queen. They're full of flavor with just the right amount of heat.

The standout feature is the DQ FlameThrower Sauce. It's no secret what it is. It's just chipotle sauce with added hot sauce. If you don't believe it, I'll break it down in the next section, but Reddit also seems to agree.

We'll use Chipotle peppers in adobo sauce for this recipe, which gives the sauce its signature smokiness and heat. You can also use canned chipotle pepper sauce.

🧑‍🍳 Replicating At Home

In my opinion, FlameThrower Sauce is just chipotle sauce with hot sauce. Dairy Queen doesn't explicitly state it, but it's pretty obvious from their ingredient list:

Soybean Oil, Water, Hot Sauce (Distilled Vinegar, Red Pepper, Salt), Sugar, Egg Yolks, Distilled Vinegar, Food Starch-Modified, Contains 2% or less of Salt, Natural Smoke Flavor, Spice, Extractives of Paprika, Xanthan Gum, Mustard Bran, Peppers, Garlic Powder, Sodium Benzoate and Potassium Sorbate (Preservatives), Onion Powder, Ground Chipotle Peppers, Calcium Disodium EDTA (Protect Flavor), Jalapeno

You can see that ground chipotle peppers and hot sauce are both listed as ingredients. Most chipotle sauce recipes use canned peppers in adobo sauce, so we'll use that, too.

The first ingredient is soybean oil, which tells us that the sauce is mayo-based (mayo is made with oil, vinegar, and eggs).

But I tested this recipe with only mayo and found the sauce to be too runny. I recommend adding full-fat sour cream or Greek yogurt to help thicken it.

If you prefer, you can also use xanthan gum. Simply mix in ¼ of a teaspoon and blend the sauce until it thickens.

🧂 Ingredients

  • Chipotle Peppers in Adobo Sauce: We'll use three chipotle peppers and a teaspoon of the sauce. You can find these in the Mexican section of most grocery stores.
  • Hot Sauce: I'm using Frank's RedHot Sauce today, but feel free to use whatever hot sauce you have on hand.
  • Mayonnaise: I recommend using full-fat real mayonnaise for its thicker texture.
  • Sour Cream: Helps thicken the sauce as the hot sauce makes the mayo runny.
  • Onion Powder and Garlic Powder: These are both listed on Dairy Queen's ingredient list. Feel free to add freshly minced garlic for extra flavor.
  • Black Pepper: Freshly cracked for the best flavor.

💭 Top Tips

  • Use Good Quality Mayo.I recommend using Hellman's brand, though any mayonnaise can work.
  • Experiment with spiciness. I recommend two teaspoons because too much can make the sauce runny. To get extra spiciness without runniness, you can add ground cayenne pepper or, even better, ground chipotle peppers.
  • No Food Processor? No Problem: If you don't have a food processor, La Costena, a popular brand for chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, now offers a processed form called Chipotle Pepper Sauce. To make the sauce, you can simply mix it with the other ingredients.
