Ingredient Notes
- Oats – You need to use the old fashioned rolled oats for this instead of the quick cook variety for this almond granola.
- Spices and flavoring – ground cinnamon, vanilla extract and salt add flavor and taste.
- Maple syrup – This acts as a binder and sweetener. You can use honey instead.
- Vegetable oil – this acts as a binder and helps make the granola crunchy. You can use olive oil canola oil instead.
- Almond butter – the signature flavour of this dish. I used a smooth almond butter but you can use smooth peanut butter instead.
- Water – reduced the amount of oil needed which make it that little bit healthier.
- Whole almonds – Raw whole almonds were used. If you want to add already roasted almonds then do so as the Air Fryer Granola is cooling down.

Make It In The Slow Cooker
Get full ingredients list and instructions from the recipe card below.
- Switch the slow cooker on and thoroughly oil the bowl.
- Add the prepared granola into the bowl and partially cover the lid (you will have to use a thin wooden spoon or chopstick to keep it open with a weight on top of the lid. This allows the moisture to escape).
- Select slow cook and set the time for 3 hrs. Cook until the oats are crispy golden, making sure to mix the granola every 30 mins.
- Switch off the slow cooker, pour the granola in a thin layer on a baking tray, mix in any additional dried fruits and nuts (if using) and allow to cool completely before storing in an airtight container.
Recipe Tips
- It is best to use a rimed baking sheet when baking the granola.
- This is not too sweet – I like my granola that way. But you can double the syrup mixture if you prefer.
- Do make sure to cook the granola at the temperature the recipe calls for. If you cook it at a high temperature you risk the granola not drying out but actually burning.
- If you want clusters, then add a little more liquid and let clusters form when baking the almond granola.
- Feel free to crumble the granola using your fingers, if you don’t want large pieces clumping together.
- If making in and Air fryer, then keep an eye on it and remove it when it is golden, as it will continue to darken for a few minutes more.
- If making in a slow cooker, oil the insert generously including in the seams before adding in the oats.
- Leave the slow cooker lid open so that the moisture escapes and the oats get crispy. I did this by putting a very thin wooden spoon between the lid of the slow cooker and the bowl and added weight on the lid to keep it down.
- Stir the slow cooker version granola every 30 mins until done so you get lovely crispy golden oats.
- Spread the granola on a baking tray to cool completely before storing in an airtight container.
- If you want to add dried fruits and nuts, then stir them in as the granola is cooling down.
Recipe Variations
- You can use peanut butter and cashew butter instead of the almond butter.
- Add in dried fruits – mix in dried figs, apples and sultanas.
- Vary the nuts – Walnuts, pecans and hazelnuts work great in this recipe too.
- Mix up the spices – try cardamom, nutmeg and ground ginger.
- Vary the grains – you can add grains like quinoa into this granola.
Storing Tips
- Let cool completely before storing When properly dried, I have stored this for up to 6 weeks with no problems.
- You can also freeze granola in a sealable freezer bags.
FAQs
Are oats gluten free?
Yesoats are a naturally gluten-free grain. However, they may be prepared in a way that means they become contaminated with gluten during processing or packaging. SO please make sure to get oats that are labelled gluten free if you need to.
What Is The Difference between Granola And Muesli?
Both contain oats but granola usually has some sweetened and oil added before being baked or air fried whilst all the ingredients in muesli are normally uncooked with added dried fruits and nuts. Muesli is normally *healthier* than granola due to there not being any extra added sugar and oil.
